Summer

Post image for Coming Down the Home Stretch

It’s that time of year again. The weather is warming up and classes are winding down. Our natural instinct as humans may be to take it easy and enjoy ourselves as summer gets closer and closer, but it is essential for students to stay on tract. These last few weeks could be pivotal when it comes to a high grade (or one you’re not so proud of…).

Stay on Track

With such little time left in the semester, students often tend to not worry as much about their classes as they did at the beginning (myself included). Unfortunately, the final weeks also usually mean all your papers and projects and tests are coming, and if that’s the case, you can’t afford to slack off. Even if you are doing really well in a clas,s it would be foolish to let some last semester slacking cost you your shot at Dean’s List.

Registration

Registration is an animal of its own. The scurry for class openings and pre-requisites begin, and if you don’t give it your all you will fall behind and possible miss something you need. The first thing you need to do is make sure you meet with your advisor. I’m sure the upper classmen know this but for Freshmen it can be confusing. It’s not like registering for this spring’s classes, you are no longer guided through every step and are expected to do it on your own.  You must meet with your advisor before you can register for classes. Registration begins April 17th so time is running out. Sit down, plan your schedule out along with a few back up plans and be prepared for the madness that is registration week.

Basically what I’m telling you guys is I know the weather is nice, and I know how it can be hard to stay focused with only a few weeks left. I am just as excited to start my break but focus on school for just a little longer and you shouldn’t run into any unnecessary problems. Focus on your schedule, get your papers done, study for finals and then ENJOY SUMMER!

Why Not Go Outside?!

Post image for Why Not Go Outside?!

by Ryan Munns on March 20, 2012

I’m sure I’m not the only one who has noticed the drastic weather changes recently. It was legitimately HOT yesterday and it has hit the 70′s a couple of times in the past two weeks. I loved walking to my classes and seeing everyone outside doing something. When its so nice out there’s no way you can stay locked up in your dorm. So, it got me thinking about what are some activities we as students could do at BSU to embrace this gorgeous weather.

Play a sport:

No matter what it is, get out there and play it! If you’re a basketball person, take advantage of the extra sunlight and hit the courts. I know that’s where I spent most of my time last week. Maybe you love Frisbee. I see countless people around the Quad tossing one around. There were also lacrosse players passing back and forth, footballs being thrown and everyone getting in on the action. You don’t need to be great at a sport to enjoy it.

BSU Slip and Slide:

Okay so at first I thought the perfect place for this was the Shea/Durgin hill….but now that hill is a pile or dirt and rubble..so that’s out of the question. However, there is a lot of room on the Quad, or the little grassy area next to East Hall. All you need is a bathing suit, A LOT of water, and some trash bags. Now this idea may sound kind of messy (which it most certainly is), but how fun does it sound?

Childhood Memories:

Do you know what game I miss from when I was a kid, Manhunt. Manhunt was something that everyone in the neighborhood could get involved in and  have a ton of fun doing it. This idea would most likely have to wait until the sun was going down, but it’s much better in the dark anyways. Imagine a campus-wide Manhunt search. There are SO many places to hide (inside of buildings would be off-limits, of course). This may be the trickiest of all the ideas to accomplish, but why not try it out?

BSU Water War

Picture this: two teams approach each other on the Quad with a line drawn in the middle. Both teams are armed with water guns and water balloons. THEY BATTLE UNTIL ONLY ONE IS LEFT. It’s played like dodge ball-if you get hit with water you’re out! Whether it be a stream of water or a blast from a water balloon, it’s all in good fun. Everyone grew up loving water gun fights on hot summer days and I don’t think it’s any different now.

Which of these ideas sounds the best? Would anybody be interested in making some of these ideas happen?

The word summer brings joy to (most) everyone’s ears- and photo opportunities for everyone’s camera: sun, the beach, bonfires- all the rest of the hot mess we call summer. What if someone were to add in “going to class!” to my list of summer activities?  I always thought that was why I went to school at all: summer was my reward. Going back to school even longer? No Thank You! But sometimes, necessity calls.

School’s NOT out for the Summer

That’s right.  There will still be pencils, there will still be books, and there will still be teacher’s dirty looks.  Some of your friends won’t have to take summer classes because they don’t need to, and your jealousy will be hotter than a toasted pig.  It’s not that fun. There are a few things that really grind my gears about it, for example:

Eww Driving

Unlike commuters, college students who live on campus aren’t used to driving to school every day to get to class.  If you live in one of the nearby towns, it’s really not much to complain about, even in the summer. But if you have a little bit of a commute- lets use Cape Cod (my neck of the woods)- you’ll have to deal with the heat, the fumes, and obviously (I want to whisper this) the traffic! You give me one Cape Codder who likes getting on and off the Cape via the Bourne or the Sagamore bridges(the only way off) and I’ll give you a magical flying pig.

Sitting in Class vs. Having Fun-

Jeepers Creepers, how to choose….

It’ ll be tough to be in class or doing homework while your friends talk about beach outings and parties that you missed, no doubt about it. Your extra credits will seem pretty useless compared to all the fun everyone else is having.

Can You Commit?

Summer classes take place much more often- sometimes 5 days a week, and if you have any sort of commitment already (your job, possibly your children, going to Gramp’s 100th birthday party, etc.), than it might not be realistic for you to spend the time and money on summer classes.

The Truth?

Your friends are probably not having much more fun than you are- most of mine work all day.  You won’t miss out on too much because summer classes, as said before, are fast (about 5-10 weeks, whichever you decide), and you can even opt to take an online class if it’s offered.

Git ‘Er Done

It’s an accomplished feeling when you complete a summer course, especially knowing that you got it out of the way, and you don’t have to take it in the summer.  I’ve taken an intersession course before, so if I can do that, I’m sure you can take a summer course. All you need is to constantly keep the image of completing the class in your in mind, and I can guarantee you’ll have the motivation to succeed.

Have you taken summer courses? Do you plan on it?
