Hello Video Squad

Next year will be completely different for me, instead of writing, I will be filming.  I will be completely in my element.  I love film, and everything about it.  I am majoring in Communications Media Studies and really focusing on the film aspect.  Hopefully when I graduate I will be able to work on some cool movies and instead of reading my blog posts, you can watch them!

As most of you know Campus Moviefest wrapped up with the big finale last week!  It was such a fun event as it always is.  This year around 500 people attended the finale in the RCC Ballroom.  Last year I entered the movie A Loss Refound.  The movie made the top 16 and I was beyond excited.  But knowing the competition here at Bridgewater State University I knew if I was to ever win I would have to step up my game to the next level.  So over the last year me and my friends have been planning a comedy.  This was my first time to dabble into comedy, and I had no idea how to go about this.  But sure enough when that week came, we were ready and Interquenchin was born.  I accomplished my goal and we won Best Comedy of 2011!  It was unbelievable.  It is my life goal to be a filmmaker, and to win this competition, especially here at BSU has just solidified my goals.  We are going to be traveling out to Los Angeles in June to attend the international Grand Finale.  BSU has some great movies going out there; Sacrifice and Bliss won Best Picture made by Jim Sass, and Kevin Eam’s Best Drama Unattainable. I think I can speak on behalf of all of us going to the West Coast by saying it is going to be a great learning experience for all of us.  We get to attend a ton of great seminars and workshops throughout the whole trip.  This whole thing has been a great experience and it keeps getting better!

My next year is going to be a busy one.  I am taking 19 credits, I am the President of the Bridgewater Video & Film Association, I am working on the RCC Video Team, I am working as an Edit Lab Tech, and I will probably be doing some side projects.  Hopefully I will be able to do a guest blog post and update you on how I’ve become the master of balancing. With all three of my positions I will be fully enveloped in video stuff. Don’t get me wrong though, I can’t wait!

Thank you all  for reading!  Its been fun! Be sure to watch for the RCC Video Squad in the Fall!  Good luck with finals, and have a safe and fun Summer.

Well everyone, the wait is over.  The snow is gone, the sun is out, and we are ready to have some fun before finals!  Springfest is the tradition everyone looks forward to all year.  It marks the nice weather, end of the semester, and best of all… summer!  The 2011 “superhero” Springfest has a lot to offer, so here are the details of what’s happening this week:

Day 1: Monday April 18th

To kick Springfest off (lame joke) Free the Children are sponsoring 3v3 soccer games from noon-2pm.  The proceeds of money earned during this event will all be donated to build schools in Sierra Leone.

At 4pm the carnival comes to town!  4-8pm in the Moakley parking lot Program Committee and SGA have brought back the carnival.  This year the carnival has: fried dough, cotton candy, bumper cars, swinging chairs, and gyro!  This is not an event to miss!

Day2: Tuesday April 19th

11am-3pm in the lower foyer of the RCC you can go get a superhero caricature drawn of yourself.

At 6pm in the Kelly Pool the annual Cardboard Boat Races will be getting under way.  Whether you’ve created your own boat, or just like to watch others sink, head over to the pool at 6 for some laughs.

Have you ever seen The Green Hornet?  Well, whether you have or not, at 8pm in the RCC fountain area you can catch a showing of it before its even released on DVD, not to mention the free food!

Day3: Wednesday April 20th

The girls of Gamma Phi will be rocking on the steps of the RCC all day, literally, in rocking chairs! Be sure to donate to a good cause.  All money raise goes to the Children’s Physical Development Clinic!

While passing through the RCC with your friends be sure to stop by the lower foyer anytime between 11am and 3pm.  SGA and Programs committee are putting on an event that will make you a real superhero! (not really, but it will look like it)  They will have a green screen set up, and you and your friends can choose what superhero background you think is fitting for you, and leave with a picture for proof to your friends that you’re a superhero!

My favorite… The Campus Moviefest Premire!  Wednesday night at 7pm be there.  Come check out the awesome movies our school produced this year and find out who will be going to Hollywood!  Wheter you made a movie or not, walk through the red carpet, maybe win an ipod for being voted best dressed, and grab a seat, because this will be a great event!

Day 4: Thursday April 21st

The fifth annual commuter vs. resident mud bowl tournament will be going on from 10am-5pm!  What’s better than getting down and dirty playing some mud volley ball?  Well, I’ll tell you what is-  after you’re done playing, you can get your picture taken for a sports illustrated cover shot!  Don’t want to get dirty?  That’s fine you can still get a cover shot!

Ladies and gentlemen please welcome this year’s Springfest comedian, well known from the movie Half Baked, SNL, and more recently on Pizza Hut commercials… Jim Breuer! This funny guy will be making us laugh Thursday night at 8pm in the Tinsley Center.  You can bring one guest, but be sure to bring your student ID’s, its a 18+ show!

Day 5: Friday April 22nd

Friday will begin with the light of a match in the lower great hill parking lot at 1pm.  The Bridgewater Fire Dept and the BSU police will be lighting a fire in a mock bedroom to demonstrate how important fire safety is in the residence halls.  So come see the damage that can be done by a single match!

The international Culture Club is sponsoring an international soccer game and BBQ.  So come try some new foods, and maybe even score a goal at 1pm on the Tinsley field.

If you’re hanging around campus, be sure to check out AWARE’s annual Dragfest! Join in the fun at 8pm in the RCC Ballroom.

Day 6: Saturday April 23rd

Springfest 2011 will come to a close on Saturday after the 6th annual earth day celebration.  It will be sad it’s over, but come enjoy the last day 8:30am-noon in the RCC fountain area, to help preserve Bridgewater’s beautiful parks and conservation areas!

Everyone have a safe, fun Springfest!  Have as much fun as you can, because finals are right around the corner.

Excited for this years Springfest?  Will Jim Breuer top Iglesias’s performance last year?   What event are you most excited for?

We’ve all been there, sitting in a core class,  wondering why the school is making us take another pointless class. But of course you do the homework, attend class and count the days until you are free. Well, I’ve got some new that might just shock you. These classes that seem like little nothings, are actually some of the classes that will help you prepare for the real world.

I know, shocking! But Bridgewater State’s core curriculum was designed to give students the tools they need to be successful even after college. So, I’m sure you are wondering which of these classes you should be adding to your schedule…

SO, here are four classes that will help you in your real world adventures:

Writing 1 & 2:

Yes, I know these are two classes, but they go hand in hand, and are a core requirement for everyone.  To put it simply, if you cannot read and write efficiently, you will not be able to get the job you want.  It’s as easy as writing professional emails.  In the working world, you are going to have to email fellow workers or even clients.  When you write the emails you need to know how to write efficiently!  If your email is a mess with spelling errors and bad grammar, you will not be taken seriously and it could possibly put your job on the line.  Employers in today’s modern society look at writing as a basic skill, and it you aren’t up to their standards you’re going to be in some trouble.

Comm. 130 Human Communication Skills:

Speeches are a big part of this class. (Wait keep reading!)  Not very many people like to do speeches, but it is great training for public speaking.  Public speaking is a must in the modern job market also known as the real world.  This class helps you prepare the key elements of being comfortable with you public speaking.  There aren’t  a lot of  careers where you won’t have to speak publicly- whether it is in front of co-workers, bosses, or employees.  This class will help you hone your skills and get you comfortable with the idea of public speaking.

Geog. 298 The Secret Life of Coffee:

This class is a real eye-opener.  It’s not just simply about coffee but it goes deep into the realities of globalization.  Our world is quickly being inundated with globalization, you hear about it every day.  People are losing their jobs and they are being outsourced to where it’s cheap.  Once the jobs are re-located the new international workers are paid pennies to make products western nations pay top dollar for.  Here you will learn the pros and cons of company’s strategies for profit and how it effects everyone else.

ACFI. 100 Fund Financial Reporting:

I am the first to admit, I am not a math guy.  It’s my hardest subject and for a lot of people it’s probably their easiest.  But for those of you skeptical about taking this course, I warn you it is hard, but I learned a lot.  This class teaches you about the modern business world and techniques businesses use to make profit.  You will also learn about the stock market and good techniques for investing.  In the real world, there is a lot of money to be made in investing.

These four classes are just a few examples of the many offered here at BSU.  Obviously you will want to focus on your major, but make sure you are still learning subjects outside of it too.  If you always keep your mind open, you will be more successful and will be a well rounded person.

Have you taken any of these classes?    Are there any classes you would recommend?     What classes do you think would help you in the real world?
