Warning! If you are easily scared and do not want to hear about ghostly phenomenon on campus or may be offended by the ghostly content, this post may not be for you.

Have you ever been in your room and heard something go bump in the night?  You think, maybe it was my roommate or  the people above us.  But in the back of your head you start to remember those ghost stories you heard back when you were a freshman… Just close your eyes and go back to sleep because it may have been something out of this world! Or, read these stories and have fun trying to fall asleep tonight! (Insert scary laughing)

-Tillinghast Hall-

Way back before Tillinghast was known as Tilly, it was an all girls dormitory.  It was the original dormitory for the college when it started in the 1800’s.  In those days instead of RA’s there were headmasters.  Tillinghasts headmaster was an old woman who always seemed to be looking to bust some freshman girls for doing something wrong. (Be thankful today’s RA’s are not so mean!)  Rumor has it: the headmaster was woken up in her sleep to the sound of some students causing a ruckus on the roof.  She immediately went down the hall and climbed out the widow where she found the girls causing mischief.  After a mean scolding she followed the girls back through the window, but when it was her turn to climb in she lost her footing and fell off the roof to her death. I worked at Tilly for a semester and I did indeed work in the evening and admit the place was very scary and creepy, but I always walked around upstairs when I had “downtime” and I never heard anything weird.  Go and see for yourselves walk around the upstairs of Tilly at night and test your luck!

-George-

The Campus Center at Bridgewater State University is also rumored to have its own ghost.  His name is “George”.  Now I don’t know if he was named by students, faculty, or maybe that was his real name.  Whatever the case may be, don’t be scared, George is not out to scare anyone.  Rumor has it that George likes to play tricks on people and make them re-think what they are doing.  Sometimes he is unlocking locked doors; sometimes he is playing instruments in the auditorium. (I wonder if he is any good.)  There are stories dating way back that tell the creepy tale of George.  He is also rumored to move props around and play with the lights.  Whatever it may be it seems he is just looking for something to amuse himself!  If you are in the Campus Center late at night studying or practicing for the play, you may as well just go along with his jokes or maybe he won’t be so friendly to you!

Below is an alleged photo of George on the Campus Center stage taken by the Project Contemporary Competitiveness high school summer program.  This photo appeared in their yearbook.

Bridgewater State is rumored to have a lot of ghostly phenomenon around campus and that is only the reported accounts.  There are thousands of new students here each fall, they all must have different encounters in this phenomenon whether they believe it or not.  You could easily hear something and pretend it was just the wind (that’s what I do!) but for some brave students they dive straight into it and investigate.  Just in time for the scary month of October and Halloween; go out and see for yourself! Because I believe that Bridgewater State is still “awake” when you are asleep!

Have you experienced ghostly phenomenon here at BSU? Have you heard any stories that I missed? Have you investigated anywhere on campus?

Thank you Max Quinn for providing us with your Urban Legend Ghost Tour pictures and notes.

Can you believe Halloween is right around the corner? With midterms week and the cold weather finally starting to kick in, I know that the holiday definitely crept up on me. On such short notice, you may be lacking the funds necessary to pull off the Halloween extravaganza you pulled last year, but fear not! I’ve got some money and time-saving tips to make this year’s celebration become one of your best college memories.

COSTUME IDEAS THAT WON’T BURN A HOLE IN YOUR POCKET

You can’t do Halloween without dressing up, obviously, but if you’ve been to one of the seasonal costume stores at the mall yet, you’ve probably noticed how expensive pre-made costumes can get. Not to mention, by buying a pre-made costume at the store, you automatically know your costume is not unique. What if you show up to your Halloween party and you’re one of 7 different people who decided to be Snooki? Consider a few of these fun and creative ideas:

Generational Costumes: Choose your favorite decade (50′s, 60′s, 70′s, etc…) and use old clothes you haven’t worn in years to complete your outfit.

  • Use preppy blouses and polos for the retro 50′s feel,
  • Tie dye and peace sign items for the 1960′s hippie look
  • Sunglasses and bell-bottom pants to look like a 70′s disco master
  • Leggings with wide-necked sweatshirts to get the feel of the 80′s

What’s great about generational outfits is that most of us have these items lying around so this is basically a cost-free costume. Even if 5 people at your party decide to be hippies, your costume will be made up using your own closet, therefore making it completely unique.

Inanimate objects: Some of the best and most creative costumes I’ve seen are completely unconventional and sometimes a little odd. For example, one of the best costumes I saw was when someone decided to dress up as a calculator. They simply bought two pieces of large posterboard, drew calculator buttons on the front, and tied it around their neck with some string. These costumes tend to require some time and effort, but won’t cost you more than $10 at CVS.

Pop culture icons: In today’s world, there are so many unique icons that literally throw on ANYTHING to make an outfit.

  • Anything sparkly, unconventional, and a little “out there” could be considered the perfect Lady Gaga costume.
  • Throw some white power or facepaint on and suddenly you’ve become someone right out of the “Twilight” movies.
  • Cover your face in bronzer or tan face paint and you’ll look like you just came back from the Jersey Shore.
  • Wrap a heavy belt around you ankle, and suddenly you’re Lindsay Lohan with her S.C.R.A.M. bracelet.

Simply browse through a few pages of Perez Hilton for ideas- the possibilities are endless.

PARTY ALTERNATIVES

Maybe you’re big into partying, maybe you’re not. Regardless, here are some fun ideas for Halloween that may be even more fun than the traditional food, drink, and apple bobbing.

Haunted Houses: This may sound a little cliche’, but ridiculously fake haunted mansions never fail to scare people out of their minds. Whether it’s the creepy clowns that roam the parking lot to  get visitors fired up or the dark rooms filled with fake blood and gore- you will have the time of your life. To find the haunted house closest to you, check out MA Haunted House’s official website.

The Bridgewater Triangle: The Bridgewater Triangle is a 200 sq. mile area that includes parts of the towns of Taunton, Easton, Raynham, Bridgewater and Lakeville- just to name a few. It’s often called the most concentrated area of paranormal activity in the state of Massachusetts. Centered around a swamp rumored to be cursed by a native american tribe a long time ago, taking a walk through on Halloween night could definitely be really fun.

Salem, MA: If you remember from my Day Trip ideas post, Salem, MA is the place to be during the Halloween season. The old Salem Witch Trials seem to have had the opposite effect that the Puritans wanted. It has literally become a Mecca for witches (not the cliche Disney villan “witch,” but people who actually practice the art of witchcraft) all over New England. Aside from that, there’s great restaurants and live entertainment- you might just learn something new as well!

Try something new this Halloween and get your friends involved! You can have parties for the rest of your life, but take advantage of these new ideas to mix things up a bit!

What was the best Halloween costume you ever had? Ever been to any “haunted” places? Feel free to leave suggestions in the comments for other fun, alternative things to do this weekend!

A Whole New Playground

graphic of a Do NOT sign with text that describes bullying

by Patrick Simas on October 25, 2010

Remember “back in the day” when you used to get picked on and made fun of at the playground during school recess? That first big encounter between you and a bully that’s so cliche and used over and over again in movies and other forms of media? Well, those days might have met their match. Nowadays Cyber Bullies are prowling the cyber playground.

In today’s world with technology dominating our social lives via Twitter, Facebook, and other social networking sites, the playground bully has reached a new level to torment and abuse students. Bullying in general is wrong and frowned upon, but now that the harassment can affect others with a simple stroke of an enter key is frightening. Also, texting is another landscape ready to be trampled on.

The Affect on the Victim:

Bullying and harassment alike can cause such a dramatic and prolonging affect on students. The slightest jab could cause a hemorrhage to a student’s self-esteem and leave a scar forever in remembrance of the event. Through Cyber Bullying, the antagonizer can simply strike at home on his computer, or even through text messages, making a victim out of anyone.

Monitoring Cyber Bullying:

The big problem in dealing with this epidemic is the lack of ability to monitor it. Schools can only do so much in dealing with general bullying because they are within the school system. It is when the students are out and free to do as they please that makes is harder for schools to monitor bullying. Victims could perhaps report these abuses to authorities, either teachers, parents, or police (pending the severity), but sometimes it is too late to act. The scars are already starting to from.

How Can We Beat Cyber Bullying?

Since there is no true way of monitoring and controlling Cyber Bullies, we can at least put them in their place. Hurtful, offensive, negative language and speech should not be tolerated in any form. If there is an instance where this is occurring, the worst thing you can do is wait and let the problem go away on its own. Most of the time it won’t. A true, honest response will immediately help to control the situation by voicing your discomfort and how you feel. Maybe a civil rational conversation could resolve the harassment and reach understanding.

In an ideal situation the previous response would work, but since bullies are usually irrational, ignorant, and intolerable of compromise and understanding, other routes are best to deal with these cyber cowards. On social networking sites such as Facebook and MySpace, people can block unwanted people in order to avoid contact with them. They could also report the abuse through the network.

We Say NO! (To Cyber Bullying)

Cyber Bullying is a sad abuse of a privilege that ruins things for everyone. The internet is supposed to be a place of freedom where we have the power to learn and experience anything. Texting and other technological routes of communication are supposed to be a positive way to interact. No one deserves the harassment of Cyber Bullies.

**If you encounter a Cyber Bully, don’t worry you are not alone. By sticking together we gain strength and can stand up against any adversary.**

Have you ever encountered a Cyber Bully? How did you handle it? Do you have any advice on how to deal with a Cyber Bully?
