You ever heard that made-up term, “thinspiration?” If not,  here’s a synopsis: they’re photos of emaciated, deathly thin women/sometimes men.  They’re posted online and used so people can motivate themselves to lose weight- normally  they are used as a mode of inspiration (hence, “thin” spiration) for people with eating disorders.  There’s something wrong with this picture.

Fellow Blogger John’s Post gives us important specifics of the actual physical, psychological and statistical factors about eating disorders and college students, so I’d like to expand on his data and add the problem of the internet’s influence.  Think for a second how many times the average college student goes online a day. And then think of the amount of images flooding on the screen right in front of them, and how easy it is to access them.  Add these  all up and think of the possible problems they pose for people with eating disorders or eating disordered behavior.

I’m not so sure I want to die, but these motivational pictures and sayings are persuade me to risk my life! YAY!

Let me give you an example, (note: this site is not promoting eating disorders) of a “motivational concept” that thinspirational websites thrive on: “The Thin Commandments.”  Seriously?

There shouldn’t be pictures of people whose ribs are showing as a mode of motivation.  Do you really want to risk your life so you can look like a prisoner of the Holocaust?  This isn’t a joke. Once Tumblr issues a new policy that prohibits sites that have images of starving Thinspirations, you know it’s serious business.

This is an issue that’s been prevailing for a while throughout the nation.  I think a question to ask yourself when you see these pictures and are possibly “thinspired” by them, is this: What if my best friend wanted to be this skinny and risk their lives? What if my little sister or my cousin wanted to look like this? I’ll answer it for you: It’d be horrifying. They wouldn’t want you to risk your life, either.

Does it bother you that the media shows these images? Why do you think so many girls want to look like starvation victims?

That there are just too many people that don’t like cats.  Cats love you just like your dog Spot does- they just aren’t  as energetic or interested  in  running  to the door when their owner/food-supplier  greets them.   I believe that cats are one of the best of the smartest  animals/even just smartest pets at all.  Throughout my lifetime I have never gone without a cat or four- although I kind of wanna kick the cat right now because he’s all up in my important business papers and Taco Bell wrappers.

They don’t need affirmation 24 hours a day.  They aren’t continuously up in your Face, whereas a dog comes flying when they see/hear you so that they can beg for dog treats.  The cat wonders to itself,’’He does this happen every single day at the same exact time.  How can anyone crave so much attention from someone?’  and ‘Maybe they’ll call him Robot Spot, that’d be hilarious!’

The dogs want to secure living with their owners and hence perform a whole “I love you so much, owner” song and dance. But cats already know, with very keen logic, that it’s obvious that their owners love them.  A pet-owner wouldn’t have allowed the cat/dog/salamander etc. to live and in the house if they hadn’t.

Independence is huge in a cat’s life. They use the kitty litter box without being trained. There are some pets who refuse to go a day without pooping on the rug.  Cats don’t require so much of your own energy, whereas dog owners see their energy deflate from training Spot.

Cats will save you those hours, therefore use them to work on something productive.   I don’t mean productive like play Dance Dance Revolution for the extra hours- I meant things that are not the opposite of productive. If you were wondering, yes, I was saying DDR is the opposite of production- not that the game isn’t outrageously amazing.

Do you have a dog? Do you dislike cats?

Post image for 4 Blogs/Websites You’ve Never Heard Of!

Hopefully Social Media Week hyped everyone up about blogging and creating websites to establish yourself professionally and socially! If you kind of missed the excitement of it all, it might be because you thought it was all business and no play, right? Not true! In fact, you can create blogs and websites that attract more attention than a standard “professional” website by creating something entirely of your own style.  I prefer to look at the more comedic side of the internet, so I made a list of some funny sites/blogs that might spark your interest, and possibly inspire you to design one of your own.

Awkward Family Photos!

Here’s a scenario you’ve definitely already experienced when your whole family’s together:  At least ONE of your brothers, grandmas, etc… is a picture-hater and therefore a repulsed face is bound to show up in one of your pictures.  Or let’s say your dog, Spot, was not invited to the family Seder(that’s a Jewish holiday, if you didn’t know), and as the traditional picture-of-the-whole-table picture was about to be taken, Spot jumped on the table just in time to spill and step in the entire feast.  The products of my examples are on this site.

Engrish

You know those Ricola cough drops that you take when you have an unfortunate cold? This site, whose mission is showing the hilarious ways Asian countries misinterpret words and their syntax, showed a picture of a bag of cough drops, but instead of writing “Pineapple Coughdrops “ they wrote “PAINAPPLE COUGHDROPS.” Wait, so is this cough drop gonna make me even more sick? Even though, as a cough drop, its personal duty is to cure my coughing pain?  If it’ll get me outta work, well… maybe I’ll take a PAINAPPLE COUGHDROP. I think it’d be entertaining if someone(possibly even a student) whose English was their second language and knew how America mistranslated things, it would make for a great website as well!

Funny or Die

Ever wanted a mix of Youtube, washed-up celebrities, and hilarious content? Funny or Die is exactly what you’ve been looking for. Founded by Will Ferrell (even if you’re not a fan of him, don’t fret- he’s not in every sketch), the site is full of videos and articles that allow viewers to vote either “FUNNY” or “DIE!” It’s way more fun than Youtube’s “like” and “dislike” buttons, in my opinion.

Totally Robot

If you’ve read my other posts, then you’re aware robots are on my brain lately. This site proves to be imperative to my lifestyle at the moment, since it gives me the scoop about all things Robot, including their eating habits, their routines, their mannerisms, and other important robot information.  Tumblr, the service that this blogger used to create this webpage, is one that you may want to try if you’re interested in making your own!

If make a blog, remember, it doesn’t have to be related to work.  P.S.  - Is there any chance you’d be interested in making one about robots?

Do you have a blog? Will you ever make one?
