Ever seen a ghost? Well, if you’re looking for some ghost hunting action this Halloween season, you might not have to go too far. Colleges tend to be breeding grounds for your typical horror stories and Bridgewater State isn’t immune. This campus is especially “haunted” because of its proximity to the legendary Bridgewater Triangle. Check out some of these spooky BSU tales and keep them in mind if you ever want to freak out your roommates.

{DISCLAIMER: All of the following stories are tall tales; local legends with very little evidence to support them. Please do not take them too seriously.}

FIRE! In Wood Hall

The residents of Wood Hall should pay attention to the fire alarms at night because, rumor has it, a young woman set herself on fire years ago. She is said to run through the hallways at night screaming “Fire!” and banging on the doors, but when the occupants answer the door, no one is there. Next time you awake to a knock at the door, be careful- you may never know when someone from the other side is here to see you.

Spirits of Shea-Durgin

Shea-Durgin residents have lots of ghosts to deal with. On the fifth floor, there is supposedly a poltergeist who enjoys stacking chairs, putting coke cans on televisions (which is probably just a prankster freshman, but use your imagination), and stopping elevators.  Hmm… I wonder why BSU has had elevator maintenance scheduled for a few days before Halloween?

In one unlucky room of Shea-Durgin, there lives the ghost of a girl who was murdered by her jealous boyfriend. She was found naked with bruises all over her neck. There was also a letter from her boyfriend asking why she had cheated on him. At night, screams and gagging sounds can be heard from the same dorm room that is still used today.

Death Smell in Student Apartments

There is a smell of decay and death that arises in one of the BSU student apartments. Supposedly at night, a knocking on the door can be heard along with stomping and loud sounds coming from outside, but when the door is answered ,no one is there. Once you are back inside that apartment, a horrible smell comes out of nowhere- enough to make you sick to your stomach. What could it be? Who knows?

George the Friendly Ghost

This one is possibly the most famous ghost story on campus and you may have even heard it sometime during your time here. It’s the story of George the ghost that is said to haunt the auditorium in the RCC. As I was told by a proctor at PCC, George resides mainly in the auditorium, but sometimes wanders out into the rest of the RCC. He enjoys playing tricks on people like switching lights on and off or locking and unlocking doors after you use them. He is even supposed to play instruments left in the orchestra pit. But don’t worry George is BSU’s Casper- he’s just trying to get his kicks as he hangs out for eternity.

BSU definitely has it’s share of supernatural activity, but what proof is there beyond these stories? Were they just made up to scare freshmen? It’s up to the BSU students to find out if these stories are just spooky fiction or horrifying fact.

So do you believe in ghosts? Have any more BSU ghost stories? Anyone find any evidence or experiences to shed some light on these rumors?
