Halloween Candy Nostalgia

by Ryan Munns on October 30, 2012

When I was a kid, Halloween was one of my favorite holidays. I loved finding costumes to wear and, of course, I loved the candy that you would get as a reward for going up to stranger’s houses and saying “trick or treat!” Now a days if you look at what your younger siblings, nieces, nephews, or your own kids are getting in their candy bags, you may be sad. It seems like there’s too many “healthier alternatives”, or just a handful of your basic Milky Ways and Snickers.

If I had my way, we’d bring back some of these classic candies to mix things up a bit.

Butterfinger BB’s

Does anyone remember these awesome, little, round, bite-sized candies? I know I sure do. Everyone likes Butterfingers, so why wouldn’t you like the mini sized version of them? The crunchy peanut butter taste surrounded by a layer of chocolate is amazingly wonderful, and I must admit I probably ate a few too many as a kid. I just couldn’t help myself. Unfortunately, Butterfinger BBs are no longer in production.

Pixie Sticks

Pixie Sticks are the greatest. It is basically nothing but sugar in a hallowed out straw that’s closed on both ends. It is probably  definitely not very good for you, but that’s not what Halloween is about. It is the one day a year where you are allowed to eat whatever type of candy you want! So why not eat pure sugar in a tube? My favorites were the red, blue and purple ones.

Smarties and Sweet Tarts

After chowing down on all those M&Ms and Baby Ruths, sometimes you just want candy that is sweet without all the chocolate and caramel. Smarties fit that bill perfectly. I love how you get so many (usually 15-30) pieces in each package.

Like Smarties, Sweet Tarts are a great chance of pace on Halloween. They taste just like their name suggests, a little tart but mostly sweet. The slightly sour spark makes you like the sweet taste that much more!

Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups

Above all, I have always and will forever love Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. I know that you can still get them today on Halloween but I’m not talking about all of these new variations of the original. I am talking about the original package with 2 or 3 peanut butter cups. Those have simply withstood the test of time and are still the greatest.

Halloween is a great time of year for many reasons, although the candy might be one of the most important. Hopefully this made you think about all the favorite candies you had in your Halloween bages growing up.

What was your favorite Halloween candy? What is the worst candy you have received on Halloween?
