BSU’s Next Renovation: The RCC

As a student here at Bridgewater State I can tell you it has been impossible to ignore the seemingly ongoing construction for the last year around campus. Weygand Hall is coming along nicely and is on track to be completed next summer, and the Conant Science and Math Building is something to awe at. Not to mention, the increase in green space through the redesign of Chapel Lot and the soon-to-be University park has really changed the overall feel of the campus.

The new buildings are nice and all, but we can’t help but ask: what building needs to be renovated next?

AND THE WINNER IS…

I think we can all agree that we find ourselves in one building more than others… and that would be the Rondileau Campus Center. The RCC tends to date itself with some of the classrooms and old looking furniture and could sure use some upgrading. Here are some ideas.

NEW FURNITURE

Furniture can truly affect the vibes you get from a room or area and old, grandparent-style furniture just won’t cut it anymore. You can tell how worn down and used up a lot of those couches and chairs are just by looking at them. Let’s be honest: a school that is all about looking to a bright, new future could sure use some newer looking items.

COMMUTER LOUNGES

It’s time to please the commuters too. The current commuter lounge isn’t completely terrible… I mean, at least there is a television…

Okay, fine. I confess- the commuter lounge is AWFUL. Why would commuters want to spend their time in a lesser version of their living rooms? This needs a change. They need to remake it completely and start by locating it in a new spot. There needs to be more open space, tables, chairs, and a BIG T.V. You could even add a microwave or toaster oven just in case some students don’t have a meal plan.

Classrooms

Walking into an RCC classroom is like taking a trip back in time. Most of the rooms look like they haven’t been touched since the school was built. In some rooms, they still have to use chalk boards that get wheeled around from place to place. In other rooms, there are big heaters that were put right in front of the whiteboards on the walls, so it’s almost impossible to reach and write on them. Ever been to the demo room? That place is full of broken desks with awkward tables hanging off of them.

ALL of this needs to be fixed. The RCC needs a serious facelift.

Do you think the RCC is the next building to be renovated? What improvements would you make?

So a paid member of the campus center staff, in a campus center blog, objectively decides that the RCC should get the next bag-o-cash renovation? Wait; stop the presses; this is headline news. By the way, the renovation was supposed to start two years ago. I guess a park rated higher on the administration’s “students need this” scale.

    Bobby-

The story is obviously not “headline news.” This is simply an opinion piece that we hoped would open the floor for discussion. We don’t have a record of posting news and we will never the source for breaking information on campus. For all the latest, credible BSU info, check out The Comment’s site.

RCCblog serves as an open forum for the Bridgewater State community. It is a place for students, faculty, and alumni to post their opinions and reflect on campus life.

    Thanks for your feedback!
