Winter break comes at the perfect time for most students- myself included. After a four month block of classes, projects, midterms and finals, it’s nice to be able to take a step back and enjoy some time off. This was my first winter break as a college student and the thing I couldn’t help but notice is how much different it is from a high school break. In high school you would get about a week off from school and then on January 2nd you’d be right back at it like nothing has changed. Well, in college that’s totally different. Not only do you get a full month of school off, you also come back to completely new courses.
Winter break starts with Christmas, my favorite time of the year. It’s a time to get reacquainted with some family members that you haven’t seen in awhile, and that’s exactly what I did. I know some students use the break to work and make some money, but if you don’t have a job waiting for you in your hometown then it’s really hard to find short-term, seasonal work. It may seem unproductive to just enjoy yourself and take time off during break, but I assure you, it has benefits.
Now, I’m not saying I didn’t do anything over winter break- that wouldn’t be any fun. I spent time with my friends from home that I haven’t seen in awhile. We played a lot of pickup football games which is something that has become sort of a tradition with us. I got to spend a lot of time with my brother and cousin. I don’t get to see them much during the school semester so I was happy to spend time with them. I used my winter break to reconnect with my family and friends, a very important part of my life. Going forward I feel rested and ready for the new semester.
What did you do with your time off? Did you work or relax? Do you feel ready for the spring semester now?
