Trending Topics (Week of 12/16)

This a notable week in the United States, between happiness on the homefront, athlete attention and changes in the social media world— here are the biggest stories of the week.

FINALLY an End:

This Iraq War is finally coming to an end after nearly nine years. This war took the lives of almost 4500 Americans and injured more than 32,200. Certainly, these are just numbers- people can’t not truly understand or comprehend the magnitude of those statistics. I for one, could not be more happy that the Iraq war is ending. Although I am not a fan or a supporter of war, I did agree with the intentions and reasonings for the war when it first started.

But- enough is enough. Too many families have lost loved ones and too many heroes have lost their lives, and I simply can’t not find any just reasoning for more lives to be lost. I thank all of our soldiers for their hard work and dedication, I now hope we bring back the soldiers from Afghanistan as soon as we can.

Tebowing?

So I can’t pretend to be a football fan,  because I’m not- however there is a football player who is getting a lot of weird media attention lately. Tim Tebow player on the Denver Broncos, has inspired a phrased coined for him “Tebowing”. Apparently the player has been seen taking a knee for a little silent prayer during games  As the team began winning games his behavior hasn’t gotten even more attention and now people are copying the position.

I mean, it’s kind of weird to copy a man praying- however there is certainly worse things people could do-and copy. So, more power to you! I’m glad a celebrity is getting media attention for a reason other than scandal, it’s refreshing.

New Facebook:

Facebook has done it again. They have changed and reconfigured the facebook layout to it’s new  format called Facebook Timeline. They are presenting it with the facade that it’s sort of like a digital scrapbook, where you present what you want the public to see. I checked it out on Facebook to see the preview and quite frankly, it made me a little dizzy.

It could be my brain in paper-writing overload, but I just don’t think I can handle that kind of a change at this time in the semester. Right now you can get the new Facebook by typing ’timeline” into the search box. If not, eventually everyone will be asked to transfer to the new format in the future.  But for now- I mean, if it’s not broken why fix it?
